ABI (Ankle-Brachial Index)

The Ankle-Brachial Index is a crucial test for assessing the flow of blood in the legs. It's an essential diagnostic tool for detecting peripheral arterial disease (PAD), helping in early detection and proper treatment planning.
Blood Pressure Measurement

Ever heard of the ABI test? It’s a simple check-up that can tell us a lot about the health of our arteries, especially in our legs and arms.

What’s Up with Our Arteries?

Imagine your arteries are like highways for blood. Now, sometimes, just like roads get blocked due to accidents or construction, our arteries can get narrowed or even blocked. This is often because of fatty deposits. This blockage condition is called Peripheral Artery Disease or PAD for short. When you’ve got PAD, you might feel pain or tiredness in your legs, but even scarier, it ups your chances of heart problems and strokes.

So, What’s the ABI Test About?

It’s like a traffic report for your arteries. The doc checks the blood pressure in your arm and compares it to the blood pressure in your ankle. If the number (or ratio) they get from this test is too low, it’s a hint that there’s some blockage going on.

Why Stop at ABI?

While the ABI is super helpful, sometimes docs want the full traffic report. So, they might also check the big arteries in your neck with a carotid ultrasound or the main artery in your belly with an abdominal ultrasound. This trio of tests gives a complete look-see of how things are flowing.
